She is my daughters, my best friend, my neighbours and my nieces. Millennials. I am drawn to them like a moth to a flame. They fit the definition of what Lisa would call a fire starter: relentless, driven, passionate, concerned and fearless. Yet I cannot help to feel they have traded face-to-face intimacy for emotional self-protection, choosing digital convenience and connection, and creating boundaries with 2-metre poles. Rather than deal with the high-friction realities of a physical presence and deep vulnerability, many have chosen the comfort and safety in a lifestyle that allows them to create and manage their boundaries from a distance.
I believe this is the correction the world needs to cut the strings of a sick and dying patriarchal system …. along with burying romantics and chivalrous knights like myself.
So, you want to become her? I think you are on your way, if not there. Your gentle, confident and persistent voice and presence gives the thunderstorm a more compassionate face. A firm and fierce grace. Yet hit the anvil with a velvet hammer. I think of Eleanor Roosevelt, a woman I greatly admire.
